The Earth Hour in 55 Words

Inspired by Solilo, Usha Pisharody, Tearsndreams, Smitha, Ajit and Dhiren my attempt at 55 words fiction :)

The Earth Hour

We would have forgotten if a friend hadn't called to remind!

But we sat in a balcony lit by many neighbours’ lights. Son brought out his guitar and we sang tunelessly. We SMSed all our friends, and took pictures.

Then a friend messaged back, ” You are not supposed to use cell phones cheater!”

and in India, with the many power cuts we have, we don't need to wait for the official earth hour!

Take a bow, IHM! This was a gem, just like Solilo's "Dilemma"!

Surbhi said...

@Imp's Mom: You bet, we had some slight showers in Noida and therefore there was a power cut from 8.15 to 10.30.

We switched off the inverter and played Antakshari! Me and Dad vs Mom and Bro - but Dad cheated so much to help Mom that I called the game off when it was time to eat. :(

We also sat on the Balcony playing anthakshari with the street lights more bright than ever reflecting on our faces. Many neighbours were doing the same thing.

ps we did not send smses but I kept on getting calls on cell.

Ha..ha..a you wicked lady!

Chalo we have lots of hours to go and also have dinner at a friend's place. So a group candle light dinner it is. :D

:) Great! The 55 er, yours, had to speak of something so darned relevant :) That is why I was so looking forward to it too!

Good show. You compressed an ideal into 55. Not bad at all :) :) :)

Earth Hour here, had one TV channel, that my son peeked at briefly, that said, very simply, in a small notice, that if one had gotten there, one is to switch off the TV and all other lights n fans etc, and get back at 930 only. Loved that channel. It's a local, called Rosebowl. We sat around in the dark too... with half an hour as the mandatory power cut, and the other half voluntary :)

What better way to have a 55 done, than this one?? :) Loved the concept and the ease you manage to bring into each post f yours IHM!! Lovely :)

Even we had spent our time talking and laughing, at the balcony, listenin to the windchimes :) felt good, and different this time!!

n my sis did switch on de TV for a quick peek. to be warned by "Rosebowl"!! I loved deir warning too :) as though they caught us cheating, live!! hehe!!

@Imp's Mom It did occur to me too that “we don't need to wait for the official earth hour!”

@dinu We thought we’d make it a break sort of .... just sit in semi darkness and relax : )

@Winnie the poohi Another friend called to say they could see from their house hat our lights were not off!
..these were those who had their lights off and needed something to do : )

@Nitwit Nastik Really followed Earth Hour!!! And it was a change and fun too. It had been some time since we just sat and just stared at the stars and just relaxed.

@Surbhi A power cut at the time of Earth Hour, it’s really true that we don’t really need an Earth Hour in India :(

@Charakan ... it sounds really great – sitting in the open and spending time just spending time with family, but what is even sweeter is that others were doing the same : )

Indian Home Maker said...

@Solilo Candle light dinner sounds great! Or beach picnics ...

@UShaPisharody Sahsu mentions the same thing ... I found the SMS really funny, and we had only a few houses with lights switched off :(

@Sashu Oh yeah that's what it must have felt like, being caught cheating :)))

Dhanya said...

Hahah... as some of em so rightly pointed out, we are in India and the number of power cuts we have each day very much makes up for everything..... funny post though :)

OG said...

:) LOL ihm.... :) your friend also used the cell phone.... she is also a cheater... :)

great one ihm.... :)
yes, as solilo says, group candle light dinner would have been great!

Ha! Ha!
We had planned to go down but there there was a thunderstorm!!!
My daughter who is in nursery kept on reminding me that if we don't switch the lights off, Mother Earth will 'get' fever...

Saritha said...

Nice one IHM.We are not supposed to use cell phone as well???

IHM, Can anything ever escape thru you without a message? he he... Even the 55 words you get, you spend them with care.

Indian Home Maker said...

Dhanya I agree.. but then we thought it would be fun to spend an evening like this :) And it was.

Ordinary Guy - You are right! she is also a cheater... :)

Chikki I think she was lying ...
:)

Bones I agree with your daughter :)

Varunavi LOl I have no idea Varunavi... I am sure she was just joking!
:))

Rakesh Didn't mean it like a message Rakesh! I just described what happened in 55 words.

well,
i celebrated the earth half an hour...
nice way to celebrate by playing the guitar...
next time, i'll do it..
and hopefully, by that time, i'd have learnt to play it..

That sounds like fun. Guess the use of cellphone was written in fine print :D

By the time I realized about this, the time already passed by. In fact the lights were on all the nearby buildings.

I guess the electricity officials got the whiff of our non-participation and so they decided to cut the power in the middle of the night. Guess I too joined in :D

You did not publish my comment in your last post though you did answer it :o or is there something wrong with my internet that I didn't see my comment up there.I am the same anonymous who tried highlighting the EQUALITY among various religions. As for female education well I am very very happy with the BJP's work in my state where they have successfully run many schemes for education of female.I too like you believe in the fact that without female emanicipation NOTHING can be achieved in this country.Don't our vedas say themselves yatra naryastu pajyate tatra ramante devtah
(Only where women are worshipped,Gods reside)

heyy ya!!good one :) cell phones hmm..waise, using our lappys and blogging doesnt help either :P but cant stop everything right, it shud be sensible and optimised [ohh that corporate words again duh!]

A half hour of the current cut in a power deprived Kerala is enough for all the mosquitoes in Kochi to drink up all that blood in our bodies. Forget about sitting in the balcony and playing the guitar. I would need both my hands to catch the mosquitoes!! Ha ha :-)

The 55 word fiction was done well!!

B-But everyhour is an earthhour to me! I barely use electricity! I'm very conscious about it... I keep switching unnecessary lights at office/wherever I go, often to the nerves of other people.

So, I took the liberty of spoiling myself during the earthhour! I switched on most of the lights in my house and was trying to piss off my neighbours!

Yes, I'm THE as*hole! :P

I don't waste water either! My famliy still lives in a poor dry region of Rajasthan so it pains me when I see water being wasted.
